Tragedy on the Thames: Peter Lawson Dies in Capsize Incident

The Weybridge Rowing Club is in mourning after a long-standing and beloved member, Peter Lawson, lost his life in a tragic boating accident on the River Thames near Sunbury. On Friday, October 11, a boat carrying six people capsized close to Sunbury Lock. While five of the individuals were rescued, the 68-year-old Lawson, an experienced rower and rowing umpire, did not resurface. His body was recovered from the river on Sunday, October 20.

In a heartfelt statement, Weybridge Rowing Club expressed its deep sorrow over the loss of a “dear friend and valued member” who had been an integral part of the club for many years. “Our hearts go out to his family as they continue their grieving process,” the club shared on its website.

Lawson was not only a passionate rower but also a qualified coach and British Rowing umpire. He served as Chief Umpire for the club’s Silver Sculls and Weybridge Winter Head races. In addition to his work with Weybridge, he was a member of the Dittons Skiff and Punting Club, further demonstrating his lifelong commitment to the sport.

This tragic incident has sent shockwaves through the rowing community. Lawson’s legacy of dedication and leadership will be deeply missed, and the thoughts of all those in the rowing world are with his family and friends during this difficult time.
